Advantage of Tough Lighting Situations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We averaged about\u00a0101 degrees\u00a0in McAllen this week; so\u00a0we were\u00a0one of the cooler spots in the state, but\u00a0it was\u00a0still too hot to get out much.\u00a0 Last Saturday, Paul Denman and I went to Corpus Christi to do a seminar\u00a0for photographers participating in the Coastal Bend Wildlife Photo Contest.\u00a0\u00a0Then on Monday afternoon, I\u00a0went to the Santa Clara Ranch\u00a0with Beto Gutierrez, and\u00a0we saw some beautiful bucks and does plus roadrunners, cardinals, pyrrhuloxias and black-throated sparrows.\u00a0\u00a0 During most of this week, I just kept on culling and filing thousands of images from photo trips\u00a0back in 2009 right up to the\u00a0present.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In this newsletter, I want to show you a few deer photos from\u00a0about ten days ago.\u00a0 Next week, we will consider\u00a0butterfly photography.\u00a0 Both occasions presented challenges with difficult lighting&#8230;backlighting\u00a0and mid-day shooting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Remember, you can click on a photo to\u00a0enlarge it and get a sharper image.\u00a0\u00a0Go forward or backward with a slide show by clicking in the upper right or left portion of the photo.\u00a0 That should reveal the &#8220;previous&#8221; and &#8220;forward&#8221; buttons.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<dl as the light warmed\u00a0enough for some very pleasing colors.\u00a0 The greatest challenge\u00a0was that I couldn&#8217;t get between the deer and the sun for\u00a0&#8220;over the shoulder&#8221;\u00a0lighting\u00a0most of us\u00a0prefer.\u00a0 I had to shoot\u00a0into the sun.\u00a0 Some photographers would\u00a0have given up and gone home, but\u00a0I\u00a0love photographing backlighted subjects.\u00a0 So, I simply\u00a0photographed these\u00a0deer and adjusted my exposures\u00a0to +1 or 1.5 f stops over\u00a0the meter reading to open up the shaded side of the animals a little.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For animals\u00a0with\u00a0whiskers, fur, bushy tails\u00a0or velvety antlers,\u00a0I try to get positioned so that the sun\u00a0shines onto fur or velvet\u00a0to creat a highlight or\u00a0rim light affect.\u00a0\u00a0Deer and\u00a0rabbits are great subjects because they have\u00a0those large, thin ears\u00a0that\u00a0turn pink when the light hits them from the back.\u00a0 With wild horses, it the long mane and tail that\u00a0look so great when backlighted.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1485\" this, it helps to have a dark background\u00a0like a hill or woodland.\u00a0 The rim lighting on the fur and antlers will stand out more against a smooth, dark background.\u00a0 In this case, it\u00a0was a mesquite thicket.\u00a0 I was shooting from my car, so it was easy to move forward or in reverse until the subject, background and light were in\u00a0the\u00a0best juxtapositions.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_1488\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1488\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption extremely difficult to make\u00a0becasue my lens was pointed almost directly at the setting sun.\u00a0 The low sun\u00a0angle created a bright, orange\u00a0haze around the deer that filled the scene.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I went ahead and\u00a0made the photograph\u00a0knowing I could\u00a0deal with the haze\u00a0in Photoshop.\u00a0\u00a0With the shot opened in Photoshop, it was a matter of sliding\u00a0the &#8220;black&#8221; adjustment slider in Camera RAW\u00a0to the right until the orange haze\u00a0began to disappear\u00a0and the buck&#8217;s outline came into view.\u00a0 After that,\u00a0I adjusted the temperature and saturation slightly until I was satisfied\u00a0 that the photo was what I had seen before I looked into the camera viewfinder.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div
