Lake and Prowling Ocelots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s time to catch you up on what happened at Caddo Lake\u00a0in early May.\u00a0 As most of you know, Texas had a blistering hot spring\u00a0which certainly\u00a0affected the\u00a0bird photography.\u00a0\u00a0Early May at Caddo Lake is usually mild and quite enjoyable, but this year it felt like August.\u00a0 The birds responded to the unusually high temperatures by moving on or breeding earlier than usual.\u00a0 Nevertheless, we had a great shoot.\u00a0 Check out the photos below to get a better idea of the great opportunities for landscape photography\u00a0amid the thousands of bald cypress hung with Spanish moss.\u00a0 This shot\u00a0was\u00a0made from the landing of\u00a0a boat\u00a0dock just across the id=\"caption-attachment-1849\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Water lilies cover hundreds of acres in part of Caddo Lake near the town of Uncertain, Texas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This photo was done from the boat deck, but I made several lily shots by holding the camera over the\u00a0side near the\u00a0water surface while\u00a0watching the &#8220;live view&#8221; screen to level the shot.\u00a0 The depth of field and other settings were determined in advance so that all I had to do was get the composition set and trip the shutter.\u00a0 A 45 degree viewfinder were made with the Canon 7D camera, Canon 500 mm IS lens and 1.4 X teleconverter mounted on a Wimberley head and Gitzo 1348 tripod.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1852\" elected\u00a0to pursue some of the more uncommon birds and passed up opportunities to photograph herons and egrets at Caddo Lake.\u00a0 These birds\u00a0are numerous, but working to\u00a0get good years, I&#8217;ve\u00a0been able to get my photographers lined up for some great barred owl shots.\u00a0 This spring, the birds were especially cooperative and everyone had many excellent had an opportunity to photograph some ocelots in &#8220;controlled&#8221; conditions.\u00a0 Working with another photographer, we were able to establish a &#8220;set&#8221; with south you\u00a0this\u00a0mammal can be photographed in\u00a0south Texas where\u00a030-80 of them still survive, but that\u00a0isn&#8217;t likely.\u00a0 A\u00a0 few lucky persons have seen\u00a0them\u00a0in the wild.\u00a0 So far,\u00a0the mostly nocturnal felines have refused to\u00a0pose for photos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Check out next week&#8217;s newsletter when I will take you to a
