Most of last week, I\u00a0was\u00a0in the Galveston, Texas area\u00a0to lead several nature photography workshops and field trips.\u00a0 All were part of FeatherFest, an annual event that attracts birders and photographers from around the country and the world.\u00a0 My\u00a0outings included San Luis Pass, Galveston Island State Park, and High Island (done\u00a0on my own).\u00a0\u00a0Surprisingly,\u00a0we saw\u00a0only a few\u00a0of the various\u00a0neo-tropical migrant\u00a0birds (warblers, buntings, tanagers, vireos, etc.)\u00a0which should have been “falling out” in the area in mid-April.\u00a0\u00a0It was the resident birds that made our visit so successful.<\/p>\n

Weather for FeatherFest was exceptional and included some great sunsets and sunrises.\u00a0\u00a0The photographers\u00a0at this year’s festival\u00a0exhibited exceptional\u00a0interest and focus when we were working on the beaches and dunes.\u00a0\u00a0When we (tour group leaders) suggested a ground level position for photographing shorebirds, the photographers went to the sand like veterans.\u00a0 If we spotted a bird in the marsh,\u00a0everyone waded right it.\u00a0\u00a0It is always fun to\u00a0work with photographers who will go the extra mile to get exceptional photos.<\/p>\n

Great Egrets were nesting in abundance at the Audubon Society's High Island rookery.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The High Island rookery photos were captured with the Canon 1D Mark IV camera, Canon 500 mm IS lens, Wimberly tripod head, and Feisol tripod.\u00a0 Contrary to what we’d heard, we were permitted to use tripods while photographing at the rookery.<\/p>\n

At Galveston Island State Park the weather and bird diversity were exceptional.\u00a0 On the first morning out, we were greeted by a variety of shorebirds, ducks, night herons, roseate spoonbills and other wading birds.<\/p>\n

Our photographers had to share the gulf-side beach with more casual visitors, but most got some great bird pics.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Fishermen shared the beach with our photographers at San Luis Pass but the birds seemed to be used to all the human activity.<\/p>\n

Chasing\u00a0gulls in flight was the best way for the\u00a0class to learn the basics of\u00a0action photography.\u00a0 I\u00a0sat on the beach while\u00a0hand holding the camera and 500 mm lens to get this take-off shot of a laughing gull.<\/p>\n

My next workshop at the Block Creek Natural Area near Fredericksburg is full, but I hope you will consider it for next year.\u00a0\u00a0Eastern bluebirds, painted buntings, summer tanagers, hawks, owls and more\u00a0await our arrival.<\/p>\n
