Before Thanksgiving, I spent a week photographing mule deer and whitetails in the west.\u00a0 Along the way, a few prairie dogs, bald eagles and\u00a0geese\u00a0got into\u00a0the mix.\u00a0 Below are a few of the 5000 thousand images\u00a0from the trip.<\/p>\n

Big mule deer bounding\u00a0over the grasslands to chase\u00a0another buck before it can make advances toward his doe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"Snow<\/a>
Snow and cold temperatures\u00a0seem to intensify the breeding urges of Rocky Mountain mule deer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"Many<\/a>
Many large bucks move out into the grasslands to find bedding cover.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"As<\/a>
As daylight fades on the Rockies, a big buck leaves his bedding area.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"My<\/a>
My last look at this monster: antlers against a pink sky.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"Way<\/a>
Way out west the prairie dogs are feeding on weeds peeking through fresh snow.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

It was so cold in November that the Canada geese had to slide in for a landing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\"Several<\/a>
Several bald eagles gather on the ice to\u00a0pick at the remains of a coot who went skating on the wrong lake.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

My little Nissan Rogue\u00a0 got great gas mileage but was less at home on the range than this\u00a0frisky\u00a0white-tailed deer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Doe and fawn white-tailed deer soaking up the warming afternoon sun.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"Except<\/a>
Except for a quick glance my way, this old buck was totally focused on following a love interest.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

Note what seems to be a third antler in this buck’s forehead.\u00a0 His right antler forked at the hairline and grew laterally before shooting up as a misplaced brow tine.<\/p>\n

A great piece of luck was\u00a0 my encountering\u00a0this bald eagle in a lonely tree at the end of\u00a0a prairie\u00a0road.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"There<\/a>
There are some\u00a0monarchs in those mountains!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

These images were captured with Canon 7D and 1D Mark IV cameras\u00a0with a 500 mm and 70-200 mm lens with 1.4X teleconverter.\u00a0\u00a0 Most of the time, I was hand-holding the camera for greater versatility of movement during some fast action.<\/p>\n
