Ten\u00a0days ago at Santa Clara Ranch, the temperature soared to over 100 degrees\u00a0so\u00a0most wild\u00a0critters were coming to water several times a day.\u00a0\u00a0Surprisingly,\u00a0most of the\u00a0birds\u00a0were well feathered\u00a0and\u00a0 colorful, so all we had to do was\u00a0remain\u00a0cool and quiet in the photo blind and enjoy the photography.<\/p>\n

Here are a few shots from that weekend:<\/p>\n

\"Crested<\/a>
Crested Caracaras on perch.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

On Saturday morning, we had 6 crested caracaras, two Harris’s hawks and several black and turkey vultures attracted to the food we had placed at the hawk blind.<\/p>\n

The Canon 100-400 mm lenses were perfect for flight and landing sequences.<\/p>\n

Greater Roadrunner carrying a pecan shell???<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I have no idea where this “nut” came from, but a greater roadrunner enjoyed several minutes of play with it.<\/p>\n

\"Green<\/a>

On Sunday morning, the green jays were extremely active and ready to pose.\u00a0 This shot was at 1\/4000 second, f6.3 and ISO 800.<\/p>\n

\"Hooded<\/a>
Hooded Oriole female drinking with northern cardinal and cottontail rabbit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

At times, there was a big crowd gathered around the pond\u00a0at our blind.<\/p>\n

\"Young<\/a>
Young gobbler Rio Grande Turkey wading.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A small flock of 8 wild turkey (mostly this year’s young) came looking for grain at mid-morning.<\/p>\n

\"Groove-billed<\/a>
Groove-billed Ani at pond.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

We saw Groove-billed Anis looking for a drink at two of the blinds.<\/p>\n

\"Trio<\/a>
Trio of Northern Bobwhite quail drinking.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Many Northern bobwhite quail came by our blind to eat and drink.\u00a0 It has been a good hatch year.<\/p>\n

Several quail enjoyed having others of their kind to chase.\u00a0 This little guy was impressive with his feathers ruffled.<\/p>\n

The white-tailed deer waited until sundown before appearing at the water hole.\u00a0 Our patience paid off as we got some nice images of two young bucks drinking.<\/p>\n
