\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

While organizing photo files last week, I came across\u00a0a number of \u00a0shots from\u00a0a morning trip\u00a0last spring\u00a0to\u00a0South Padre Island (SPI), Texas.\u00a0\u00a0They reminded me that being\u00a0on SPI in late April, rubbing elbows with dozens of other photographers\u00a0is always\u00a0a\u00a0special event.\u00a0\u00a0On this day, every clump of trees\u00a0was teeming with\u00a0colorful, migrating songbirds.\u00a0 Maybe the best part of this trip was that I didn’t have to spend hours crouched in a photo blind or arranging perches and water drips to attract the birds… I just\u00a0parked the car,\u00a0grabbed the camera and start shooting.<\/p>\n

These photos were taken in one morning\u00a0on the grounds\u00a0at SPI’s Convention Center.<\/p>\n

On this day, a large number of Baltimore Orioles had just arrived.\u00a0 Most were searching for food and water and didn’t pay much attention to the photographers.<\/p>\n

Getting into position for a photo that offers a clean background and reasonably good lighting can be a photographer’s greatest challenge.<\/p>\n

First time visitors are always shocked at the variety and color of\u00a0all those warblers, buntings, grosbeaks, tanagers, etc. crammed into a small woodlot.<\/p>\n

Worm-eating Warbler searching for insects.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Some of the\u00a0birds like this Worm Eating Warbler\u00a0are\u00a0unusual finds and\u00a0they aren’t much for posing.\u00a0 Photographers have to spot, focus and shoot quickly or the opportunity will be gone.<\/p>\n

So, this is a small sample of what can be seen and photographed on a good morning.\u00a0 These shots were made with\u00a0Canon 500 mm and 100-400 mm lenses and Canon 7d Mark II camera.<\/p>\n
